How long does gutter guard actually last here?

Gutter guard lifespan is one of the most dishonestly marketed numbers in the trade, because the same product genuinely does last a lifetime in Ballarat and genuinely does fall apart in seven years at Blacks Beach. Nobody is technically lying. They are just quoting a number that was never measured anywhere near here. These are what we actually see across Mackay:

• Powder-coated marine-grade aluminium mesh: 15 to 25 years. Toward 15 within a kilometre of the surf, toward 25 inland and out through the Pioneer Valley. This is what we fit on the overwhelming majority of jobs.
• Coated steel leaf guard: 10 to 20 years. Stiffer and better under heavy eucalypt load, but the coating is doing all the work and once it is nicked, our humidity finds it fast. We would not put it near the beaches.
• Black polypropylene guard: 3 to 7 years. Cheapest to buy and the most expensive thing on this page, because you pay for it twice. We do not fit it and we pull a lot of it off.
• Fine pest mesh: as per the base metal. The weave does not change the lifespan, the alloy and the coating do.

Note the width of those ranges. That is not hedging - it is the honest spread across one small city, and it is why anyone who quotes you a single flat number without asking your street name is guessing.

Here is the thing we wish more Mackay homeowners knew before they signed a quote. When we go to a failed gutter guard job, the mesh is usually fine. The fixings are gone. The clips have let go. The trim has lifted. The panel itself is often completely serviceable and sitting in the yard.

The number one cause is dissimilar metals. Put a mild steel screw through aluminium mesh in salt air and you have built a small battery at every fixing point. Lowset brick in Andergrove, about 56 lineal metres. Poly guard fitted roughly six years earlier by an out-of-town crew. The southern run was tired but intact; the western and northern runs had gone brittle and were shedding fragments into the gutter, so the guard had become the blockage. Strip and dispose of the old product, hand-clear all four runs, then fit 56m of colour-matched marine-grade aluminium at $49 per metre: $2,744 plus $180 removal and disposal, so $2,924 all up. The original poly job had been about $1,600. Six years and $1,600 bought nothing but a delay, and this is the single most common way people in Mackay end up paying twice.

How long does gutter guard last in Mackay?

It depends almost entirely on what it is made of and how far you are from the surf. The workmanship warranty from the person who actually fitted it is the one that will matter to you, and it is the one to ask about. A long product warranty from a company with no local presence is not much comfort.
