Gutter overflowing in a Mackay downpour?
It is bucketing down, water is pouring over the front of the gutter or, worse, running back into the eaves. Here is what to do in the next ten minutes, why it is happening, and what actually fixes it so you are not doing this again next wet.
First: stay on the ground.
Every wet season somebody in Mackay goes up a ladder in the rain to poke at a downpipe and comes off it. Wet Colorbond has almost no grip, a gust can take a ladder out from under you without warning, and there is very often an old power lead or a solar DC run tucked along the eave you cannot see from below. Nothing in your gutter is worth that. The whole point of the list below is that all of it is done with both feet on the lawn.
- Move the car. Overflow off a full gutter comes down hard enough to mark paint, and it usually lands exactly where you park.
- Clear the stormwater grate. The pit at the base of the downpipe is often the real blockage, and it is at ground level. A handful of mango leaf and cane trash out of that grate has ended more than one "gutter" callout.
- Look inside, not up. Check cornices, the top of window and door reveals, and the ceiling in the corners of rooms on the weather side. That is where gutter water shows up first.
- Photograph it while it is happening. This is the single most useful thing you can do. A photo of water arcing over one specific length of gutter tells us which outlet has failed. A photo taken the next day, dry, tells us nothing.
If water is visibly coming through a ceiling, isolate the power to that part of the house at the switchboard and call your insurer before you call a tradie. Make-safe is their job first, and most north Queensland policies cover it. We will sort the cause out once the weather has passed.
Why Mackay gutters overflow, in order of likelihood.
Overflow is a symptom. When we get to a job the diagnosis is almost always one of four things, and only one of them is solved by cleaning the gutter out.
1. Not enough downpipe for Mackay rain.
This is the big one and it is badly under-appreciated. AS/NZS 3500.3 sizes gutters and downpipes against a short-duration design rainfall intensity, and Mackay’s is among the fiercest in the country - a long way above what the identical gutter profile would be asked to carry in Brisbane, let alone Melbourne. Our annual average sits around 1,600mm and the bulk of it arrives between December and March, frequently in violent bursts rather than steady rain. We regularly find perfectly good roofs in Andergrove and Ooralea with downpipes spaced as if the house had been dropped in from a southern suburb. The gutter is not blocked. It is simply full, because the water has nowhere to go. The fix is a downpipe upgrade or a rainhead at the discharge point, not another clean. Every suburb we work in sits in the Mackay Regional Council area, and the water has to finish up in the council stormwater system or at a legal point of discharge - not spilling beside a wall, which is its own problem in reactive soil.
2. A blocked outlet, not a blocked gutter.
People picture a gutter packed end to end with leaf. In practice the gutter is usually fine and one 90mm outlet has a wad of poinciana leaflets, mango leaf or cane trash sitting over it like a plug. Everything upstream backs up and comes over the front. A single hand-clear of the outlets and a downpipe flush fixes it in an hour, and that is exactly what a gutter clean is for.
3. The gutter has lost its fall, or its front lip.
Old brackets sag, and a gutter that has dropped 15mm mid-span holds standing water that never drains. On highset timber homes around North and East Mackay we also see gutters where the front bead has rusted through, which lowers the overflow point. Once the front of the gutter is lower than the back, water has a choice, and in a downpour it chooses the fascia. That is a gutter replacement conversation.
4. Gutter guard that was wrong for the tropics.
We are called to fix somebody else’s guard several times a wet season. Mesh that is too fine simply cannot pass 60mm of rain in an hour, so the water skates across the top of it and off the front - the gutter underneath is bone dry and spotlessly clean, and the customer is standing in a waterfall. Guard laid flat onto a tile roof instead of lifted under the leading tile does the opposite and sends water back under the tiles. What an urgent callout actually looks like.
We would rather tell you the truth than take the booking. We are a small local operation, not a 24-hour emergency service, and we will not send anyone up during a storm because there is no version of that which is safe or legal. Queensland work health and safety rules on managing the risk of falls exist for exactly this reason, and a roof in a Mackay squall is the textbook example.
What we do instead: through the wet we keep slots open for the jobs where water is getting inside the building, and those get seen within a day or two of the weather clearing. Send the photo through the quote form and say "water inside" in the message - that jumps the queue over a routine clean. Worked example. A lowset brick home in Glenella, roughly 62 lineal metres of gutter, was overflowing over the alfresco every time it rained properly. The clean took ninety minutes and found two of the four outlets plugged with fig leaf: $240. But it had also overflowed the previous three wets, so the real problem was capacity. Adding two extra downpipes at $150 to $350 each and fitting 62m of colour-matched aluminium mesh at $52 per metre brought the job to about $3,900 all up. Three wets later it has not overflowed once, and the annual clean has become a ten-minute blow-down off the top of the mesh.

My gutter is overflowing in a Mackay storm - what should I do right now?
Stay on the ground. Move the car and anything valuable out from under the overflow, clear the stormwater grate at the base of the downpipe if you can reach it safely from the lawn, and check inside for staining on cornices or above window heads. Photograph the overflow while it is actually happening, because that one photo tells us in seconds which outlet has failed. Do not put a ladder up in a tropical downpour. Is an overflowing gutter an emergency?
It depends where the water is going. Water sheeting off the front lip onto a garden bed is annoying but harmless. Water backing up behind the gutter and running down inside the fascia, into the eaves lining or down a wall cavity is doing real damage every hour it continues, and in our humidity that becomes mould in days rather than months. If you can see a wet patch spreading on a ceiling or cornice, treat it as urgent and get power isolated to that area.
Why do my gutters overflow in heavy rain but not in light rain?
Because the problem is capacity, not blockage. A partly blocked gutter still copes with a 5mm shower and fails completely in a 60mm hour. Mackay sits under some of the highest short-duration rainfall intensities in Australia, so a downpipe layout that would be perfectly adequate in Brisbane is undersized here. If your gutters only overflow in the serious falls, the fix is usually more downpipe capacity or a rainhead, not another clean.
Can gutter guard cause overflowing?
Yes, and badly fitted guard is one of the more common causes we are called to. If the mesh aperture is too fine, heavy tropical rain does not have time to pass through it and instead sheets straight across the top of the mesh and over the front of the gutter. If the guard is laid flat on a tile roof rather than lifted under the leading tile, water tracks back under the tiles instead of into the gutter. Correct guard, correctly fitted, does not cause overflow.
